Swakopmund is a seaside town and it didn't really feel a lot like Africa. The beach reminded me of most east coast beaches. The shops were a bit odd, you had to be buzzed in through iron gates. Mo, Natalie, Sarah, David and I checked out some shops, the beach, and found a nice little cafe called the garden cafe where we had a nice lunch.
Back at the hostel we paid up on our fines - every time we called the truck something other than that or Shire we were fined 5 rand. I paid 25 rand and Mo's damage was 30. I think Sarah won with the largest contribution around 50. Colin bought us some alcohol and made some punch in the cooler...or Eski as the Aussie called it. We made the amazing (terrible) decision to play 2 games of kings. By the end of the game only a few people (myself included) where suitably coherent. Most of us made it to dinner (about 8 blocks away) and even fewer made it to the bar afterward for pool and foosball. All of us made it back to the hostel before too late and I was so happy with the bed! Never thought I'd think of sleeping in a hostel bunk bed as luxurious. But after sleeping in a tent for 2 weeks, the proper bed was a welcome change.
In the morning most of the group went sand boarding and Mo and I said our goodbyes. Bittersweet - the end of our first tour. We really loved the group of people and saw some amazing things in our first 13 days. Our next tour has some pretty high standards to live up to!
Our taxi to the airport was much less stressful than the last one! No traffic and about 2 turns. We arrived at the "airport" - a tent like structure with plywood separating most areas. Pretty amazing/slightly hilarious. Tr most surprising thing was that our plane took off 25 minutes early! Never has that happened to be before. It was also pretty funny that security had one bucket for sending things throughout the X-ray machine. We're now off to Cape Town to meet Sarietha.
